In keeping with the principal goals of the SSA, which include disseminating and promoting the exchange of information about stroke, the SSA calls for applications from nurses and allied health professionals wishing to attend the SSA annual scientific conference for 2010 in Melbourne. The $1000 awards are intended to defray the costs of travel and accommodation.
The awards are available to all nurses and allied health professionals who are attending the annual conference and application is open to both members and non-members of the SSA. There will be three awards for scientific merit and two service awards. We are now calling for applications for both the Service and Scientific Awards. The criteria for the Awards and the closing dates for application are listed below:
Service Awards
These awards are for services to stroke, and will be judged by the SSA Executive Committee. To be eligible the applicant must be from a nursing or allied health background. The following will be considered in judging these awards:1. Demonstrated implementation of services to stroke in their field, i.e. > 3years working in stroke;
2. Demonstrated initiatives in clinical practice, e.g. involvement in stroke Quality Improvement projects;
3. Attendance at (or organization of) Professional Development courses for stroke within the last 3 years;
4. Participation in improving stroke services in the work environment, i.e. planned projects, Quality Improvement involvement, and further education;
5. Active participation in local stroke networks; and
6. Evidence of leadership.
Applicants must provide a summary of their contribution to stroke and may use the above as a guide. This summary should be no longer than one page, and be in 12 point Arial or similar font. Applicants must also provide a brief (no more than 200 words) reference from their nominated referee.

Scientific Awards
These awards are based on abstracts submitted, and will be judged by the scientific committee. To be eligible the investigator must:
1. Be from a nursing or allied health background;
2. Be first or second author on the paper;
3. Have contributed to the design and conduct of the research study; and
4. Complete and return the application form and provide evidence of professional status to

The applicant must nominate which abstract is to be considered for the award, and only one abstract can be nominated by each applicant. In instances where the first and second authors are both eligible using the above criteria, only one author will be eligible to apply. Authors must decide between themselves, which author will apply. Previous winners of the award are ineligible.
