National Heart Foundation Travel Grants
The Heart Foundation offers funding to support researchers working in the area of cardiovascular disease and related disorders. They are now calling for applications for the first round of Travel Grants in 2010.
Travel Grants are available to support Australian researchers travelling to present their cardiovascular research at a conference overseas. They are also available to Indigenous health researchers travelling to present their research in Australia.
There are two more rounds of travel grants for this year. Closing dates are as follows:
Travel Grants- Round 2: For travel in June, July, August & September 2010

Travel Grants- Round 3: For travel in October-December 2010 & January-February 2011

National Stroke Foundation Honours Grants
The National Stroke Foundation is funding small support grants for Honours students undertaking a thesis in the area of stroke research. The grants are a one off opportunity for the year commencing for the 2011 academic year. The value of the grant is $3000.

Funding Round 2: Applications for this grant must be received by 21st February 2011.
Who may apply?
Any Honour's student enrolled at an Australian University and completing a thesis in an area of stroke research, is eligible for the grant. Grants will be made to students in the areas of allied health, nursing and basic science.
What may be funded?
The grant is to support successful applicants for the duration of their Honours year. The grant will be made as a one off payment at the beginning of the year.

National Heart Foundation and National Stroke Foundation Postgraduate Scholarships
The Heart Foundation offers Postgraduate Scholarships in biomedical, clinical and public health disciplines. These scholarships are for nursing, medical, science and other relevant graduates seeking support for full-time research studies leading to a PhD at an Australian university or institution.
Applicants for these scholarships must meet criteria of eligibility and excellence. Postgraduate Scholarships are normally awarded for three years.
Stroke Foundation co-funded Postgraduate Scholarships
The Heart Foundation and the National Stroke Foundation are partnering to offer funding for Postgraduate Scholarships for research into the prevention, causes, diagnosis, treatment and long term support for stroke.
Scholarships will only be awarded to postgraduate students to support study towards a PhD. Awards are payable for up to three years for a Scholarship. Part-time applicants will also be considered. A separate application is not required for part-time awards.

National Heart Foundation Summer Scholarships
The Heart Foundation offers Summer Scholarships to give undergraduates an opportunity to participate in biomedical, clinical or public health research projects which are broadly related to cardiovascular function and disease.
These projects are to be carried out for six to eight weeks during the summer vacation.
Applications close 20 September 2010.
National Stroke Foundation Clinical Research Development Award
The National Stroke Foundation is funding a research grant to support a clinician undertaking research in a clinical setting.
The grant is a one off opportunity for the year commencing January 2011. The value of the grant is up to $30,000.
Who may apply?
The grant is available to any clinician working in the field of stroke who will undertake a clinical research project. Applicants will be individuals who are not currently receiving financial support for a post graduate degree. The proposed research project will be one that is not currently supported by other grants. The research will be undertaken in collaboration with an academic with a proven track record. The academic partner will have an active role in planning, implementing, and disseminating the results of the research project. The research must be carried out in Australia.
What may be funded?
The grant is to provide clinical backfill to release the applicant from clinical duties so he/she may undertake research over a 12 month period. Funding is not for research assistant support. Completion of the project within 12 months must be feasible.
Preference will be given to
- Innovative projects with demonstrable clinical relevance
- Pilot studies to enable a research project to be developed such that it could be supported by a recognised grant-giving agency in subsequent years
- Studies investigating priority areas for research as identified in the National Stroke Foundation’s Clinical Guidelines

NHMRC Post-doctoral Training Fellowships
Applications for NHMRC Training Fellowships closed on April 30 2010.
The purpose of NHMRC Training (Postdoctoral) Fellowships is to provide opportunities for Australian researchers to undertake research that is both of major importance in its field and of benefit to Australian health. Training (Postdoctoral) Fellowships provide a vehicle for training in basic research either in Australia or overseas (where appropriate), to enable Fellows to work on research projects with nominated advisers. Awards are offered to a limited number of persons of outstanding ability who wish to make research a significant component of their career.
